There are few 40-year-old attorneys in Delaware who are lifeguards and coach Pop Warner football. Of course, I've never tried to be like other attorneys.
I started working as a lifeguard on Bethany Beach 25 years ago and have been unable to give it up. It's one of the ways I serve the community. My law practice is another way. I've always believed in protecting people and families.
I started practicing law in 1994 with the law firm of Hudson, Jones, Jaywork and Fisher, which had offices in Dover and Rehoboth. I left the firm to open my own practice in Georgetown. Later, my old law firm purchased my Georgetown practice and I became a managing partner.
Still, I couldn't give up the urge to practice law my own way. In 2003, I left the firm again to open my own practice once again, with an office in Georgetown. My office is two blocks from the Circle, where we hold Returns Day festivities such as the reading of the election returns, the ceremonial burying of the hatchet, and the ox roast.
Criminal Defense Lawyer
I provide legal services in the area of criminal defense, where I believe I can help make a difference in people's lives. I help people with problems ranging from traffic tickets and DUI/DWI arrests to drug charges and shoplifting allegations — the things that are likely to get people in trouble here in the Georgetown area.
I continue to do many things that other middle-aged lawyers don't do. For example, I've been an avid surfer since I was 10 years old. I coach Pop Warner football at Sussex Central Middle School and junior high baseball for Eagle's Nest Christian Academy in Milton. I also serve on the Eagle's Nest school board. I teach criminal law and family law and at Delaware technical community college.
One thing I do that is very close to my heart is run the Ed Dean scholarship fund for lifeguards in Delaware. Ed Dean was the captain of lifeguards on Bethany Beach who hired me as a lifeguard 25 years ago.
